Within the Postmodernism exhibition I found the trio of images depicting Grace Jones to be especially thought provoking. The third image is an amalgamation of sections taken from other images of Jones, in effect rendering a complete synthetic image of her. This could be commenting on (as is the whole movement of postmodernism) the dismissal of fast paced advances and the 'new', by using already existing images rather than create a whole new one. It also alludes to the idea that technology was and is continuing to advance and be used in a way that our image and photos become distorted, leaving them unrealistic and as an inaccurate portrayal of one's self. This is a thread that I believe would be interesting to follow within the project, drawing on themes of avatars and how we are aesthetically presented in an online world, as well as ultimately the longevity of the tangible body. Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) was also featured in the exhibition and provokes ideas that I would also like to explore. The urban apocalypse it portrays shows the danger of technology and in particular 'replicants' these manufactured inorganic replicas of the human body and the dystopian future the could create.
