To explore the idea of technology Carmen, Charlotte and I created this swastika from dried flowers/ plants. The piece is hugely oxymoronic as the placid, pure and happiness that is evoked when thinking about flowers, is challenged by the image of hatred and evilness of what the swastika represented. The harsh red and black is replaced by soft lavenders conveying a delicate object and even a message of peace, the opposite of what the symbol ensued in the second world war. It is interesting to note that the swastika was originally used in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism as a sacred symbol of good luck, and so by using flowers as our material, this original meaning/ use is being alluded to.
