This video, by Artyro Castro created this video by using an open source framework to form an application that digitally substitutes his face in realtime. The opensource framework, called FaceTracker is a C/C++ API for real time generic non-rigid face alignment and tracking, it is available for download for research purposes. One of its creators, Kyle McDonald, also created the video below:

The Janus Machine from Kyle McDonald on Vimeo.

The subject is immersed in a structured light where the shape of their profile is digitised and archived. This portrait is compared to a catalogue of other portraits captured in the same way and from this an outline of the captured form is fabricated; "a playful perspective on your relationship to others, built from light, inviting you to explore further". The project pertains to the Roman mythological god 'Janus', whom is affiliated with antipodes and transitions; past and future, young and old, coming and going. Janus is delineated with two faces which face in opposite directions, and the Janus Machine is a modern representation of this mythological metaphor: the real face and that which is stored by the computer.
